Friday Favorites

It's Friday favorites which means we have made it to the weekend!

Here is my list of random goodness from the week.....

When you shop Nordstrom online in their beauty department you usually get free samples at checkout. Well last week I was ordering a birthday present and in came a free sample of Nars foundation. So I gave it a try and it happened to be the perfect shade for me, and the coverage was amazing, while still being sheer. Anyway, if you are in the market for a new foundation, try this one if you like full coverage but don't want it to look caked on. I am using Fiji light 5. I actually couldn't find that color on the Nordstrom website so I bought hit here.

If you need a good book that talks about more style, less stuff, get this book!

I am already planning my winter wardrobe. Sweaters, sweaters, and more sweaters. This one is a must, as is this one, and this one.

I love this for any kitchen or dining room. Such a versatile piece.

Are you dressing up for Halloween? I am going as a raven.
My husband wins though, he is going as this, with this. So good!

Have a great weekend!

xoxo

One Room Challenge Week 3

This past week has been a productive one, but sadly there isn't much to show besides an empty room.

I got rid of all the nasty old drywall and insulation, taking everything down to the studs. What a mess.  Not a pretty picture.

But, I did get a few more things ordered, some of which already arrived!

Here are a few inspiration pictures for you to see kind of what we are going for!

So, now that you've seen the inspiration, here are a few more items that I ordered.
I got this shower head. It's super modern but I think the lines will go good with the lines on the shower door. I ordered it in matte black.

For the faucet, I opted for this in matte black.

I have always loved this mirror, so that was a no brainer, and it was on sale when I ordered it.

Keeping with the matte black modern look, I ordered this tp holder, these hooks, and this towel bar.

For now, my bathroom looks like this. 3 more weeks to go though so I am not panicking yet!
Are you nervous for me? I AM nervous for me! haha

To see week 1 go here.
Week 2 here.

Easy Blackberry Cake Recipe

I am surprised I actually finished this cake because I almost ate all the batter first.

This easy blackberry cake recipe is perfect for fall. You can add pecans or walnuts to the recipe if you'd like, but I opted not too.

This is a 3 layer cake, but one of mine did not turn out, so 2 it is!

This cake is very moist and it melts in your mouth. If you like blackberries, you will love this cake!
The frosting is very rich, but who doesn't love caramel cream cheese?

Impress your guests by making this very easy cake this holiday season.

Pin this recipe for future reference!

Blackberry Cake with caramel cream cheese frosting

prep time: 20 minscook time: 35 minstotal time: 55 mins

ingredients:

  • CAKE
  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cloves
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground allspice
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 5 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups vegetable oil
  • 1 1/4 cups seedless blackberry jam or preserves
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups whole buttermilk
  • 1 cup golden raisins
FROSTING

  • 3 (8-oz.) pkg. cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup jarred caramel topping
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

instructions:

Step 1
Preheat oven to 350°F. Spray 3 (9-inch) round cake pans with cooking spray.
Step 2
Prepare the Cake Layers: Whisk together first 7 ingredients in a large bowl; set aside.
Step 3
Place sugar and eggs in bowl of a heavy-duty stand mixer fitted with whisk attachment; beat on medium speed until thick and smooth, 3 minutes. Change to paddle attachment. Add oil, jam, and vanilla extract; beat until combined, 1 minute.
Step 4
Add half of the flour mixture to jam mixture; beat on low speed until just combined, 20 to 45 seconds. Add buttermilk; beat on low speed until just combined. Add remaining flour mixture; beat on low speed until smooth and combined, about 30 seconds. Fold in raisins; divide evenly among prepared pans.
Step 5
Bake in preheated oven until edges of Cake Layers are just starting to pull from sides of pans and a wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean, 35 to 40 minutes, rotating pans from top to bottom rack halfway through baking. Press gently on top of layers to flatten any doming; cool in pans 10 minutes. Remove from pans to wire racks; cool completely, about 1 hour.
Step 6
Prepare the Frosting: Place cream cheese and sugar in bowl of a heavy-duty stand mixer fitted with whisk attachment; beat on medium-low speed until combined. Add caramel topping; beat until smooth, 1 to 2 minutes. With mixer running, slowly pour in cream and add salt. Beat on medium speed until thick and smooth, 3 to 4 minutes. (Mixture will look runny at first but will thicken as the cream is whipped.)
Step 7
Transfer about two-thirds of the Frosting to a piping bag. Place 1 Cake Layer on a serving plate. Pipe Frosting on top of layer, using a circular motion and starting from the outside and gradually moving to the center. Repeat process with remaining layers. Cover sides with remaining Frosting. (Drag the back of a spoon in a side-to-side motion across the Frosting for a textured look.) Garnish cake with
blackberries.

Friday favorites

Is it just me, or did this week fly by?

I have been gone the last 4 weekends and am looking forward to a weekend at home.
We have a fun neighborhood Murder Mystery party to go to this weekend as well as a football party we are hosting, so it will be full but fun!

One of the weekends we were away, we stayed at a friends cabin. On our bed were the most amazing sheets I had ever felt! So soft, they felt like butter and the owner said they stay like that washing after washing. Anyway, long story short, I bought them for my own home and you are going to die when you see how cheap they are! Go get yourself some, right here,  or get them for someone for Christmas, they are that good!

A couple of new cookbooks I am loving right now for my Friday favorites!
This one is full of great inspiration, and this one takes the cake!

Speaking of cake, I have a really good recipe coming next week, it is easy and delicious and you won't want to miss it!

This is a fun neutral fall front porch idea. I especially love the unexpected round jute rug. It fills the space perfectly!

Oh man, have you seen this collection? I am seriously in big trouble!

If you love Leanne Ford as much as I do, you must read this.

I have been eyeballing these for a while now, I think they would be fab on a Thanksgiving table, but great for everyday use!

I hope you all have a fabulous weekend! See you back here on Monday.

xoxo

fall deck decorating ideas

Today I have some fun fall deck decorating ideas. It all starts with dining outdoors. It's  one of my favorite things so I thought it would be fun to show you how I set up an autumn dinner table on our deck. It was really easy to do and took about 10 minutes. Just layer, layer, and layer.

Add some blankets for those crisp evenings.

You don't need one at every place setting, just a couple will do.

I used my favorite galvanized chargers and our everyday plates.
The linen napkins give it a real casual feel, and I simple tied them up with cute wood leaf cutouts from the dollar spot at Target!

Real pumpkins mixed in with the ceramic ones add a ton of texture.
And candles, the more the better.
This candle is the one I am always boasting about.

Watching the sun set over the lake is one of my favorite ways to relax after a long day.

The gold wine glasses and moscow mule cups add that bit of sparkle and take things up a notch.

Simple cabbage from the grocery store is all that is needed for a colorful centerpiece.

I simply added a cute little sign by the door to welcome guests, and that is it. Sometimes less is more.

I used the same wooden leaf cutout like I did on the table, and another one in a contrasting color and shape. Using a sharpie I added the wording "welcome home" and hung them at staggering heights.

One Room Challenge week 2

This is week 2 on the one room challenge and today it's all about progress and products!
I am posting a day early because of a scheduled post I have tomorrow.
If you would like to start at week 1, go here to see the room from the beginning stage.

Here are some more hideous before photos for you viewing pleasure :)
The only thing I like about this bathroom is the stripes, and even they are going to go.

I mean, that floor! What was I thinking?
I wasn't apparently!

This is a tiny tiny room, so I will be maximizing every inch of space which means I will not be doing the wall mounted sink of my dreams, but instead, another vanity.

This bathtub might be the only thing left over in our house from the 1950's.

Alright guys, I started demo on the room this past week. It wasn't pretty. A lot of rot, mildew, and funky smells, I'm not gonna lie.  But you have to go through the ugly to get to the pretty right?

So let's talk about the pretty shall we?

Some products I ordered are starting to come in, while some I haven't even picked out. Yikes!

But here is what I have so far for this One Room Challenge, and I am pretty excited about all of it!

I touched on the vanity above. I found an inexpensive one at Home Depot and fell in love with the color and textures, so here is it:
On a side note, I will probably paint the handles or replace them with black ones.

I got this faucet to go with it in a matte black finish:

Now, let's address those floors shall we? They are so bad. I think I might have said that a time or two, or 500.

For the floors I will be installing this gorgeous cement tile. I have literally had it sitting in boxes in storage for about 4 years. That's how long overdue this bathroom is.

For lighting, which was never good in this room, I will be adding
a new gorgeous handcrafted sconce, as well as additional can lighting. On the ceiling that popcorn ceiling will be going by by!

And as far as the shower door, drumroll please!!!! We will be installing one of these that we had custom made for our space! Yes, I am making you click over with no sneak peek because it is that good!

I am so excited to see this room come together!

I still need to finish gutting the space, including taking down all the drywall and tub enclosure.

Address the mildew.

Pick out a mirror.

Pick out tile for the shower.

Pick out wall color.

Decide if I will keep the original medicine cabinet.

What do you think? Are you as excited as I am?

See you back next week for hopefully some prettier pictures!
