~DIY faux shiplap nook~

Who doesn't love shiplap?
Joanna Gaines made it popular, and now we are seeing it everywhere.

I recently updated our little hallway nook, which used to be a closet back in the day.
While I loved this Schumacher wallpaper, I was after a cleaner more refined look.

So I did a little research on faux shiplap and came up with this.
A trip to Home Depot, a little liquid nails, spackle, and caulk, and I created a whole new look.

This was such a simple project, one that almost any homeowner can do.

Start with these inexpensive sheets of wood.
I used 3 for my project and they were actually around $10 each in our store.

We ripped them down to 6" lengths on our table saw.
{Home Depot will do 6 cuts for free. However, they can only go as small as 12". We had them ripped down to 12" and then ripped those in half at home}

Then I painted right over the wallpaper. You'll want to paint your wall whatever color your shiplap will be. Then after you put up your shiplap, your gaps won't show a different color underneath.

I started on the back wall at the ceiling. Make sure this piece is level, as all your other pieces to follow will go off this first row.

Cut your board to length and put a little liquid nails on the back.

Again, use a level to make sure the board is straight. Many older homes like ours, the walls are typically a little off.
I used a cordless nail gun to secure as well.

Continue down, spacing evenly.
I used a penny to space ours, but depending on the look you want, you may want to use something thicker like a nickel.
When you get to the bottom, you might need to rip a piece down to size as it will rarely come out even.

Trim will go down at the base so I wasn't too concerned about getting it perfect at the bottom.

Once my back wall was finished, I moved onto the sides.
Once everything is up, spackle your holes and sand when dry.

Add your trim and paint!
I used Benjamin Moore Simply White to match the rest of our walls.

That is it, super simple, not even very time consuming.

I searched for the perfect piece of furniture for this space and was super happy to find this piece on sale. It fit like a glove with about an inch to spare.

My painting from Lizzy Love looks so good against the white!

This piece is intended to be a bar, but we use it for storing books, gardening gloves, winter gloves, hand warmers, hats, and scarves.
I love pieces that are multi functional.
The doors on the front keep our puppy from dragging everything out. I used some baskets I had from Ikea and a couple more I got at Tj Maxx.

The old crate on top is one of my favorite flea market finds.

I am so happy with this new look!

xoxo
