Easy Home Decorating Tips: Choosing Fabrics

Home decorating always include fabrics as part of the entire project. What is home décor fabric if you may ask? Home décor fabric is the cloth used to make the draperies, upholsters, towels, tablecloth, and all other home decors that are covered with cloth. They come in many patterns or prints, styles, colors, and textures. Generally, home décor fabric dramatically changes the whole look of a room thus the importance of knowing how to choose fabrics for home decorating projects.

 

CHOOSING FABRIC

The first strategy in choosing home décor fabric is to find one that you love best. It would be great to start with something that you are really interested in because finding pieces that match the fabric will be much easier later on. Make the fabric the focal point of the design by noting the design elements like the texture, prints, and colors. When you are able to choose such signature fabrics, the next task of finding coordinating furnishings and accessories will be simple as you already have a specific theme in mind.

 

ATMOSPHERE

Another technique in having the best home decor fabric is by observing the vibe of the room. For example, heavy silk and velvet are both great insulators and will look fabulous on a formal room. Billowy linens, on the other hand, give off a casual atmosphere. If you want to play safe, cotton and cotton blends will match any décor style as they are neat and brings a calm feeling.

 

PRINT OR PATTERN

Next thing to consider is the print or pattern of the fabric. The rule of thumb in decorating is that patterned furniture and patterned curtains should never go together. If you already have elaborate furniture and accessories like rugs and beddings, choose solid colors for the curtains. Now, if you have more of the simpler, and muted colored furniture and accessories, going for printed curtains is okay. You can even have prints that are small and neutral like paisley or polka dots for a hint of texture but still remain stylish and classy.

 

COLOR OF FABRIC

Lastly, deciding for the color should be one of the key points in choosing fabric for a decorating project. Basically, you have two options in choosing color. First is to have a color that blends with the rest of the room. For example, a curtain that has the same tone as the wall and is a little bit darker will really look elegant. The other option is to have a fabric color that pops out. This is great if you are looking forward to add some wow in the design as it will serve as an exclamation point in the design. Either way, always consider playing with colors but still be consistent in keeping up a theme so as not to have a distracting design that doesn’t coordinate with the others.

 

When shopping for home décor fabric, also take note of how you will use it. Will it be for big pieces like curtains? Or are you going to use it for accents such as throw pillows and runners? Also, fabrics come in many sizes, shapes, colors, textures, and patterns. Entering a fabric shop for the first time might overwhelm you. To avoid getting swallowed by the magnitude of choices, it will be best to take note of what you are looking for. It will be easy to find the fabric you need if you have specific criteria to start your search with. This will save you heaps of time and effort in going through the bulk of fabric. Most stores have a catalog too which you can consult first if you don’t want to manually search for the fabrics you need.

Know What to Expect When Shopping Home Décor for Less

Finding places where to get cheap home décor can be tacky. Of course there are plenty of shops to see both online and the physical stores but they often disappoint you in the end. Why? Basically, it is because you never know what to expect after a long search. The results do not meet your expectations so the excitement of decorating your home fizzles off.

 

Limit Expectations

The best way to combat disappointment is to know exactly what you will see as you look for shops to get discounted home décor items. If you are keen on following a budget, there are certain sacrifices along the way as you learn where to get cheap home décor.

 

Thrift Stores

First is on thrift stores. Prices are extremely low but shopping on thrift stores will have you do some digging among piles of dusty second-hand items of everything from kitchenware to children’s clothing. Of course there are also thrift stores that are well-maintained and are organized in some way. But don’t expect to have wonderful pieces sitting on all corners. Thrift stores are cheap because you do all the dirty work of finding gems amongst the rubbish.

 

Yard Sales

Yard sales are also great for shopping cheap home décor. Most yard sales are mecca for old art pieces, furniture, and home accents. However, these items are offered at super low sale prices because they are old or off season. To minimize your expectations, go to yard sales if you are looking for vintage items or you want to find old fashion pieces. Stay away if you are more of the modern gal and is looking forward to get trendy furniture and home décor.

 

Local Online Classifieds

Local online classifieds is where you can find great items for less without leaving the house. Plenty of people have been duped by online ads which is why you should choose those who are within your locality or at least within a short driving distance. This is to ensure that you can pick up the items instead of having them shipped from the seller. It lessens the disappointment over false advertising of the items specially its current state (good used condition, excellent quality, etc.).

 

Consignment Shops

Lastly, go to home décor consignment shops. If you want to have brand new items but don’t want the hefty price tags, consider checking out consignment shops. Most items are on sale price and those that are not have lower prices compared to those sold on shopping malls. Transact with the owner so you get to bargain for the best deals. It may not be the cheapest route but you can surely get some discount along the way.

 

Don’t come unprepared when shopping for cheap home décor. Know where to shop but don’t put up high expectations. There’s treasure in other people’s trash but they still come with a price. They may be low on the price tag but the effort you put in going to thrift stores, yard sales, and other discount shops is priceless so make sure you get to enjoy the experience.

Figure Out Your Home Decor Style

If you are to search for “what is my home decor style?” on the internet, pages about quizzes that can help point out which type of home decor personality will pop up. While they may be helpful at some point, most of them do not coincide with each other and you end up getting confused with each quiz you take. It does not help that there are so many styles out there and finding the one that best fits you is quite a challenge.

 

But why bother knowing about what your home decor style is? Oh there are plenty of reasons but the topmost is that by knowing your style, you can easily transform your house into a home. You will not merely make a room into a living space but rather a room that speaks volumes about your personality. Not only will it make you happy to be living in your home but it will also attract good vibes from the people who visit you.

 

To make this task a bit easier, here are five steps to help you get started:

 

1.       Research by walking around your area. Observe which houses you are drawn to. Take note of which style catches your attention most. Is it traditional looking? Or is it more of a modern style? Perhaps you are more of the vintage- loving gal who is instantly drawn to antique pieces. Or if you are more of the modern-looking chic, then contemporary art will be more of your type.

 

5.       After identifying things that you are most comfortable with, list down things that you don’t like. This will be your guide to stay clear from things that would never appeal to you. There will be times where you will become interested with something just because of trivial reasons like it being a popular piece. Having a reminder that it will never fit your dream home can do wonders in making you forget about buying it in an impulse.

 

These steps can help you figure out what you want for your home decor project. ~welcoming entryway for summer guests~

Today I am partnering with Balsam Hill to show you how I have updated my entry to welcome guests for summer.

To me there is nothing better than peonies in the summer. I have several in my garden, but never want to cut them because they look so pretty out there!

Besides that, they are always full of ants, and who wants those in their house?

If you go to buy them at the grocery store, they cost a fortune. 

Enter Balsam Hills real touch peonies.

You guys, these look AND feel like real! I literally held one up to a flower in our garden and they are almost identical!

And the best part is that you can use them year round, year after year.

I also tucked in a few roses as well.

I am always a little skeptical of using "fake" flowers, but seriously, when they are this good, why wouldn't you? These aren't your average faux stems. Even to the touch they feel real.

Outside the door I've paired some wild looking flowers with the outdoor
 rattan basket planters  
for a chic cottage farmhouse look.

In the summer these doors are almost always open.

It was important to me to create a cohesive look going from the outside in.

It only took a few new items to give the porch and the inside a whole new inviting look!

~4th of July picks~{that can be used year round}

The Fourth Of July is actually one of my favorite holidays.

Our neighborhood really gets in the spirit and we have parties and fishing derbies and lawn games and bbq's and triathlons all starting at around 6 am and sometimes going all night.

Friends and family come in from all around to spend the day at the lake.

Everyone goes all out in their decor, so I thought I'd share a few of my favorite red white and blue finds with all of you!

I ordered 2 of these for our adirondack chairs. 

I love the playfulness of them, and they can be used all summer, not just on the 4th.

I am really wishing I would have ordered these too as they look like fireworks to me!

This would be darling propped on a food table, and would be equally as cute in an office or kids room.

Picture these hanging from tree branches all over the yard!

I love these napkins....

Gather guests around a big long table to feast potluck style!

These straws add a whimsical touch.

And finally, this framed flag is just too sweet. I can picture it in a cabin, bakehouse, screened in porch, you name it.

~Pottery Barn Dorm~

I got a little present in the mail the other day.

A Pottery Barn dorm catalog. 

D A N G E R O U S 

I am really excited to help Savannah and her roommate decorate their dorm, so I have picked out a few of my favorites!

They are looking for pinks, grays, whites, and a bit of gold, very girly!

I like the idea of tapestries for a couple of reasons.

One, they cover up unsightly walls if that is an issue.

Two, they are lightweight and can easily hang from command hooks.

I also think it is important to have luxurious bedding. Just because you are living in a dorm does not mean you have to settle for uncomfortable scratchy sheets.

I love this set.

Talk about squeezing in a ton of storage into one small space!

I especially like this jewelry organizer and this wall leaning storage rack.

These mini fridges are so fun and colorful.

So many fun things to make these little spaces cute! I cannot wait to get my hands on that room.

The Aidan Gray #AGwithanedge Winners!!

The big day is here!!!  

Today, I am going to announce the winners of the Aidan Gray contest #AGwithanedge.

But first a word about the contest.

Awww, come on!!!

You didn’t think I was just going to say who the winners were – right at first?!?!?

I know it’s NOT fair!!

But, Patience Please!

And NO peeking!!!!!

Ok.  Back to the story.

A few months ago I heard from Randal Weeks, the head honcho at Aidan Gray. 

He had just finished completely restoring a 1920s house in High Point and he wanted to somehow incorporate the renovation into a contest.  After a rash of emails, Randal and his extremely talented group of co-workers came up with the contest that became known as #AGwithanedge.

Randal wanted the contest to merge artistry and design and he came up with this idea:

Contestants would photograph a room of theirs that would look better with an Aidan Gray light fixture.  On that photo, they would merge the actual picture with the fixture of their choice using a photoshop app.

Then, they would load the merged photo on Instagram using the hashtag #AGwithanedge.

Simple enough, right?!?!?

In the beginning, the award prizes were going to be all the Aidan Gray fixtures used in Randal’s renovated High Point house.  The contestants would chose a fixture used in that house and then they would pick a room or a space in their own house that the fixture would look good in.

That’s what the contest was supposed to be.

But somewhere along the way, that became too complicated and in my heart, I knew that many of you were fans of the more classic Aidan Gray, as opposed to AGwithanedge – the more updated Aidan Gray fixtures.   Not everyone is contemporary today, even though it sometimes seems that way.

And I’m glad we didn’t adhere to the rule “only chose a fixture in the renovated house” because I think it freed everyone up to dream about that one Aidan Gray fixture THEY have always wanted to own!

But still, the actual rules of the contest were complicated.

I was a little - well more than a little – I was very concerned that the contest would be problematic.  Not everyone is on Instagram and not everyone knows how to navigate Instagram.  Then there was the issue of the merged photo – using a photoshop type app to create the entry photograph. 

I was also convinced that no one would know how to “merge” photos except for a small handful of computer literate readers.

In the end…all my fears were for naught. 

We had almost 100 entrants in the contest, which is fabulous. 

I offered to create entries for those who weren’t on Instagram or who couldn’t do the picture stitching – so hopefully, no one was left out of entering.   

Basically, #AGwithanedge began with a house, a 1929 Tudor house in High Point:

Randal had seen this fabulous Tudor for sale and he thought it would be perfect to stay in while he was at market and it would also make a perfect vacation house for his three teenaged sons.   The Emerywood house is located at 210 Hillcrest near the High Point Country Club.  It had been custom built for W.C. Idol and his wife, who entertained in the house, hosting parties and garden club meetings. 

The Idols sold the house to John and Mary Diffendal who lived in the Tudor, with their many children, during their 60 years of marriage.  After John passed away, Mary continued to live in the house alone, visited by her doctor who made house calls and the hairdresser and manicurist who both came weekly.  Later, when Mary could not walk upstairs, she moved into the dining room, making it her bedroom.

When Randal bought the house, he took it down to the studs, completely renovating every inch of the house.   He painted the exterior a soft gray and white which immediately updated the house.  This detail was much debated in the Cote de Texas comment section with some of you preferring the dark red brick over the gray paint.  My vote is for the painted version!

In the end, the dream of a Weeks vacation house was not to be.  Perhaps this house was just too close to work to make it relaxing for the Weeks.  Randal sold the house before it was even completely finished:  the winter weather did not allow the landscaping to be installed and the garage apartment was left to be renovated by the new owners. 

The Weeks ending up buying another property they are currently renovating that is far, far away from the pressures of work and it will be a vacation home for the Weeks.

Despite quickly selling the house, Randal was still able to furnish it with all the latest contemporary light fixtures, furniture and accessories from Aidan Gray.  The photos will live on for a long time – and are a wonderful way to show off many of Randal’s newest designs.

Before:  Randal took the house down to the studs.  It was this beautiful, iconic banister that sold Randal on the house.

After:  The wood floors that were once mostly covered by carpet are now stained very dark brown/black.

Before:  The library was carpeted and had some wood paneling on the walls, along with faux PAPER paneling!!!!!!   I asked Randal why he had removed some of the paneling and he said, “Joni, it wasn’t wood.
  It was brown PAPER glued to the walls!!!”

After:  The library is now very dark gray/black and is a mix of old and new.

The dining room was once where the former owner lived out her twilight years.  Now, it is a contemporary space, with the custom light fixture that Randal created out of an antique altar that once held holy water.  Other pieces of the altar were used in the living room.

 

Before:  The family room.  Randal kept the charming corner cabinets, but he removed the wall on the right side, between the kitchen/breakfast room, to create a large open space.

After:  The large family room and kitchen, with the wall now removed.

Randall made this window, between the two corner cabinets, a focal point of the family room.

Before:  The kitchen.  Randal extended the galley kitchen into the breakfast room, making one extra large space.

AFTER:  The galley kitchen is now one large space with a table at the end.  Several different pendants from AG were used in this space. 

The kitchen has an amazing mirrored hood, while the entire back wall is covered in white subway tile.  I think the kitchen is my favorite space in the house.

Upstairs.  The new stairs to the attic are contemporary to juxtapose them against the original stairs with the banister that first attracted Randal to the house.

The room that was once the “sewing room” is now a cute guest room with light pink walls.
