storage and organizing solutions

When Christmas is over, and the New Year rolls around, I feel the need to organize and declutter everything in our home.

I have come up with some of my favorite storage and organizing solutions that I hope will be helpful to you as well!

An organized home is a happy home.
It is proven that decluttering is contagious, so if you start in the main living areas of your home, your kids may follow suit in their own rooms!

DECLUTTERING

You don't need to declutter all in one day. Start day 1 with the kitchen, day 2 with bathrooms, day 3 with the office, and so on and so on.

I like to set up bins or boxes in each room. I label them, attic, donate, sell, and garbage.

I keep all my sentimental items like kids items up in the attic. I also keep our holiday decor there.

Donate heavily! Get rid of items you haven't worn in over a year, something that you have multiples of, or things you've been holding onto for that rainy day that never came. It feels so good to purge and give items to ones in need.
Once that box is full, immediately put it in your car or take it to donate. Don't leave it laying around where you could pull items back out.

I hold a pop up sale once a year at my house where I will save items that are worth something but no longer of use to me. These also go up in my attic until the sale.

Garbage, a big one. Go through piles of paper and recycle. File folders will be your new best friend. Throw anything away that has a hole in it, is bent, is old, is no longer functional.

I am the queen of having a few holiday decor stragglers laying around. I make it a point to get them put away in their appropriate bins in the attic, so the next time I take them out it is a breeze.

ORGANIZING

This is the fun part. Once you have donated, thrown away, or put away out of reach, get your organizational hat on and get to work.

Here are some items I love and have used for years for organizing our own home, which I think you will like. Some are pretty practical, some are more outside the box.

This little desk is home to 2 "junk drawers" and a file cabinet on the bottom.
It is a piece I made from this, and a remnant of marble to match the rest of the kitchen.
The bottom drawer is a large file cabinet where I keep paperwork so it doesn't clutter the counter.
I have files for everyone in the family as well as, receipts, recipes, Dr., orthodontist, pets, manuals, etc. etc. I even have them alphabetized which makes finding things super easy. I have used my label maker on them for a cohesive look. A label maker is a must have in my book, so many uses for it. I literally label everything.

Under bed storage is another thing I love to have.

I prefer the ones with wheels and handles for easy access.

I use them for seasonal items like boots, scarves, and gloves in the winter, and in the summer, sandals, bathing suits, snorkel gear, etc.

And of course, I label them with my label maker.

Baskets galore. I have so many baskets, I can't even tell you. They come in handy for everything. They can be decorative as well as functional, making them an ideal storage item.

I use baskets for a variety of things. Extra socks, gloves, hats, chargers and cords, pet supplies, etc.
I usually get my baskets at Ikea or here. I also like to use vintage locker baskets for this sort of thing.

Outside the home, in the garage or sheds, we use big clear heavyweight bins for things like extension cords, tools, nails and screws, etc. We like these ones that stack and have no lid, for easy access.
We also use these in our basement for sports gear.
Both are stacked neatly on these industrial shelves. And of course, everything is labeled. Labeling bins not only makes it handy when looking for something, but also when returning items to the right place.

If you are looking for more organization ideas, check out my pantry organization post here, as well as our tiny laundry room here. I have maximized the most I could out of small spaces. The laundry room holds one of my all time favorite things on the back of the door. Total game changer, let me tell you!

Now go get to organizing, decluttering, and purging. Turn on some of your favorite music, grab your favorite beverage, and get to work.

You'll be so glad you did!

xoxo

Friday favorites

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday and are spending some time relaxing and lounging around. That is one of my favorite things to do this time of year. I took some time off my blog and social media to be present with my family this year. It feels so good to unplug sometimes and not have to worry about keeping up with all of that.

Our daughter is home from college and goes back at the beginning of January. In December our family has a total of 10 birthdays, so it really is a busy time for us.

Our son Cody actually turns 16 on December 31st!

I want to share with you a few things that I got for Christmas, because I love them so much!

I am always looking for ways for our home to smell fresh, and my family knows me well, because they got me this! It is white and blends in perfectly without being an eye sore. It also stays on a lot longer than ones I have had in the past. I like to put in this essential oil.

Another thing I got which I love is an Amazon Echo. I have it in my kitchen and it has been handy when I am cooking and need change the music, etc. hands free.

I also got these trays, because EVERYTHING looks better in a tray!

I had originally bought these for Christmas, but now that I have them, I think they are very versatile and can be up year round. They do look great though with little white twinkle lights in them.

I also got a new camera! I had been wanting to upgrade mine for so long but could never bite the bullet. My sweet husband did it for me and I am in love. I can't wait to start playing around with it! It is so small and like weight and is perfect for interior photos!

One thing I would like to do with my home after Christmas, is freshen it up with a bunch of bright white. I love these and am thinking about getting them for our living room shelves.
I also really like these.

And this one too! So many choices!

I hope everyone has a great weekend!

white Christmas decorating ideas

I had the opportunity to help a friend decorate her house for the holidays recently.
I managed to get a few pictures before the sun went down and I thought I'd share them with you today. I think you will really love this home!

The family room is light and bright with all the windows. I am in love with all the built in cabinetry.

In the kitchen I added garland around the windows and fresh greens on the table. Long bows on either end of the garland make it look really special. I tucked in seeded eucalyptus and frosty pine cone sprigs to a faux garland that really looks so real!

The formal living room sits off the grand entry and it is simply decorated with a bit of greenery and white stockings, as well as simple white trees on the coffee table.

The dining room has fabulous grasscloth wallpaper. I hung a couple wreaths with more ribbon on the mirror, stacking them for a different look. Then I filled a beautiful glass bowl with new and vintage glass ornaments.

I have helped a few people this year decorating their homes for the holidays and it has been so much fun!

I also think it would be fun to go to people's homes in January after all the Christmas decor is down, and give them a little re-fresh. What do you think?

books I am reading

Craft books, novels, decorating books, craft books, cookbooks, you name it, I love them.

I recently just got this book and it is insanely good. This book for paper lovers would make a great gift as well. It is HUGE and full of the cutest images you can use for scrapbooking, card making, etc.

Here is what one reviewer said of this book.

Even though this is the Flow Book from 2017, let me tell you: I'm happy to find the previous year's Flow Book available to order! This book is like an icon scrapbook resource, full of unique papers, tags, stickers, paper crafty things that are useful treasures for artful people who enjoy making junk journals, tags, assorted ephemera, cards, or mini albums. If you like to make junk journals or make cards, you'll love this book. I look at getting a Flow Book like getting a high school yearbook, except this is like a crafter's yearbook full of delish paper goods. This book is packed.

Another book I am enjoying is this one. In the company of women is chalk full of great images from Author Grace Bonney, founder of Design Sponge.  It makes a really great coffee table book too.

I just ordered this. So, I haven't actually read it yet, but it got great reviews and looks very intriguing.

I love to bake so this book looked fun. 103 decadent cake recipes, yes please!

I would love to hear what some of your favorite books are. Leave them in the comment section here.

Hope you are having a great day!

Eggnog Tres Leches Cake

I found this recipe in the Magnolia Journal, made it immediately of course, and it was loved by everyone.

Such a different kind of cake, one that will impress guests this holiday season.

Here is the eggnog tres leches cake.

It is so good you guys!

It's light and airy and full of flavor. It is a spongy cake that is soaked with eggnog and milk seeping through it. Is your mouth watering yet?

The subtle hint of eggnog and nutmeg make this a perfect treat this time of year.

I hope you enjoy this eggnog tres leches cake as much as we did!

Yield: 10

eggnog tres leches cake

prep time: 25 minscook time: 35 minstotal time: 60 mins

ingredients:

3 cups all purpose flour
3 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg
1 tsp. salt
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 cup {2 sticks} butter, softened
2 tsp. vanilla
2 eggs
1 cup milk
1 14-oz. can sweetened condensed milk
1 12-oz can evaporated milk
1 1/2 cups eggnog

whipped cream topping-
In a chilled mixing bowl beat 2 cups heavy cream, 1/4 cup powdered sugar, 1 tsp. vanilla, and a pinch of sea salt with a mixer on medium until soft peaks form. Use immediately or store in a covered container in the refrigerator for up to 30 minutes.

instructions:

1. Preheat oven to 350. Grease and flour two 8" springform pans. In a large bowl stir together the flour, the baking powder, nutmeg, and salt. In another large bowl beat together sugar and butter with an electric mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy. Beat in vanilla. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Alternately add milk and flour mixture, beating on low speed after each addition just until combined. Spread batter evenly into the prepared pans.

2. Bake 35-40 minutes or until a wooden toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean and the cakes are golden brown on the edges. Cool completely in pans on a wire rack.

3. In a medium bowl stir together the sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, and eggnog. Using a large skewer or chopstick, poke holes through the cakes about 1" apart. Pour half of the eggnog mixture over cakes; let soak in 5 minutes. Pour the remaining eggnog mixture over the cakes. Cover pans with plastic wrap and place on a large tray or baking sheet. Store in the refrigerator 8-24 hours.

4. Remove cakes from the springform pans. Place one layer on a cake stand. Spread whipped cream lightly over top of cake. Add second layer. Very lightly spread whipped cream over the sides. Top with remaining whipped cream. If desired, sprinkle with additional ground nutmeg. Serve immediately.

sugared cranberries

Sugared cranberries are so easy to make and are so fun for the holidays!

This is the first time I have made them and it was much easier than I thought.

Follow the recipe below to make your own. They look really great sprinkled on naked cakes or cakes with white frosting too!

Friday favorites

It's Friday once again, and that means it is time for Friday favorites! This has become one of my most read posts. I love that you guys love seeing what I am loving, hating, or buying.

I also love that you put up with the randomness of these Friday Favorite posts. They have become a dumping ground of sorts for my brain each week to share everything on my mind.

So, thanks for listening and reading! Let's get right to it shall we?

I have been wanting to switch out our dining room chairs to something a little more comfy. I do love what we have, however, these are really speaking to me. What do you think?

I am also really about using cute white and metallic Christmas trees for decorating with this year.
Here are a few of my favorites I have found:

This mercury glass tree

This one lights up.

These ones also light up, and they are on sale!

This 3 piece gold set is beautiful.

If I had an extra $360 to spend right now, I just might buy these.

This pillow is very inexpensive but looks really high end.

These Santa mugs are always a huge hit.

If you collect and/or display copper in your kitchen, this would be a fun addition.

I bet this smells amazing!

I hope everyone has a great weekend!

holiday gift guide 2018

Creating holiday gift guides is fun. Some of these things I am gifting, some I am wanting, and I some I am dreaming about.

My goal here is to help you find unique gifts for your loved ones. Not that you can't shop on your own. But, if you are feeling stuck, or need something for that hard to buy for person, my hopes is that this will help you out a bit!

For some reason I am really excited for the gift guide for HIM! Maybe it's because I really wouldn't mind anything on there either, ha-ha!

Take a peek around, see if something speaks to you, and happy shopping.

GIFT GUIDE FOR HIM

1- Pine Mountain Balsam Hill fire logs. It's like burning a Yankee candle in your fireplace.

2- Strike Anywhere matches in a fun vintage style container.

3- I am personally giving emergency kits this year. It's something everyone should have. Safety first!

4- A modern take on a traditional log holder. This would look great indoors or out.

5- For the photographer in your life. Treat them to a high quality, wireless, color photo printer.

6- This will be the last cooler you will ever buy. We keep one on our deck for extra drinks in the summer and the ice doesn't melt for 2 weeks. It's crazy good. Your husband/spouse will be thrilled to receive this!

7- Give the gift of comfort with this luxe cashmere and wool blanket. Bonus- it will look great as a decor accent!

8- Keep him warm with a cozy Patagonia hat this winter.

GIFT GUIDE FOR HER

1- Give a year long gift with a monthly subscription for a friend or loved one. Every month they will receive 3 pretty letterpress cards and fun stamps. I LOVE this idea, the idea of a handwritten card is simply lovely.

2- The only mascara you will ever buy from here on out. While you are buying one for a gift, buy one for yourself. You'll thank me later.

3- Tuck a gift card to your friends favorite coffee shop in this cute mug with a little tissue. For a fun touch, tie a ornament onto the handle with festive ribbon.

4- I don't know anyone who wouldn't want these darling crystal firework stud earrings.

5- The cutest coziest sweater, isn't it darling?

6- Hair dryers don't last forever. If you know someone in need, I have found the cutest one here.

7- Everyone needs a cute pom hat.

8- I am personally asking for this. Because all the scents are sooooo good, why not get a sampling of the top sellers?

GIFT GUIDE FOR THE KIDS

1- This game will keep the kids busy for HOURS. Just what we all need after a busy Christmas right?

2- Puzzles bring the family together. We like to have one to do together after the holidays are over and before the kids go back to school. There's something so relaxing about it.

3- Bananagram is another fun one that we have. Bonus- it fits in a stocking.

4- Send the kiddos off to bed Christmas eve in the sweetest pajamas.

5- This is really a gift for the whole family. My teenagers still go on ours, and when little ones come to visit, they enjoy it too. My mom who's 69 recently took it for a spin. Huge hit for kids, moms, dads, and guests.

6- Do your kids know what they want to be when they grow up? This is a set of "career" dress up clothes for your little ones. Bonus- re-use these for Halloween!

7- Kids pajamas don't have to match exactly. I love this cute little boys pajama set.

8- I feel like legos are a hit for anyone, any age. This ski chalet is just too cute.

Thank you for taking the time to go through ALL that!

I will be adding to this list shortly, so come back to see what I am loving for gifting for the home lover, and vintage lover.

Christmas mantle mystery box challenge

Do you remember when a group of us bloggers did a mystery box creative challenge for our coffee tables? Where we were sent a box of 10 items from the dollar store that we had to make over for our homes? If you missed it or need a refresher, you can see that post here.

Well, we had so much fun with that, that we decided to do it again! This time for our mantles, and using items sent to us from other bloggers. Items that they aren't using anymore. Items intended to go to the Goodwill.....

Traci from Beneath My Heart sent me these darling turquoise bottles.

Super cute but not really in my color scheme.

I wanted to get a little more creative for my Christmas mantle and use these in a way other than intended.

So I turned them into candle holders and here is how I did it!

The first thing I did was spray paint them white. I always have white spray paint on hand because you never know when you are going to need it.

I found some silver beaded wire garland that I cut down and wrapped around each bottle to embellish them just a bit.

You could embellish any bottles with paper or pictures and decoupage medium. You can hot glue on broken jewelry, or add rub on transfers or stickers. Glue on some faux greenery. The possibilities are endless.

Then I simply added taper candles to them and voila, candle holders for our mantle!

I placed one on one side and two on the other.
I tucked in a combination of real and faux greenery and some battery operated string lights.

The deer head stocking holders were a thrift store find and I painted them white as well.

I like how the it all came together it was really quite simple!

Here are some other sources from this room if you are interested!

Would you like to see what everyone else created with their friend's "leftovers?"

I do!

Visit my friends below to see what they did for their Christmas mantle mystery box challenge.

chocolate dipped marshmallows

Hello there!

Today I have a fun festive holiday treat for you.

Like most of my recipes, it's super easy and quick to make.

If you have little ones, include them in the fun!

These chocolate dipped marshmallows are super cute and great to eat right off the plate, or served with hot cocoa.

Next time you are at the grocery store pick up a few things:

Melting chocolate-I used milk chocolate and white chocolate.

Whatever toppings you like.
I used crushed graham crackers, crushed candy canes, and chocolate sprinkles.

Candy sticks.

Prepare and set aside your toppings in individual bowls.
Crush anything that needs to be crushed.

Melt the chocolate according to the instructions on the package.

Insert candy sticks into your large marshmallows.

When chocolate is melted, simply dip half of your marshmallow into the yumminess, then quickly roll or dip into your candy of choice.

Set on a tray to cool.

These would be very cute on a hot cocoa bar, but also cute {inexpensive and easy} to bring to a get together this season.

Kids love these, but so do adults, admittedly, I ate way too many!
